Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 4: Transcendental knowledge: Text 34

tad viddhi praṇipātena paripraśnena sevayā upadekṣyanti te jñānaṁ jñāninas tattva-darśinaḥ

Synonyms: tat — that knowledge of different sacrifices; viddhi — try to understand; praṇipātena — by approaching a spiritual master; paripraśnena — by submissive inquiries; sevayā — by the rendering of service; upadekṣyanti — they will initiate; te — you; jñānam — into knowledge; jñāninaḥ — the self-realized; tattva — of the truth; darśinaḥ — seers.

Translation: Just try to learn the truth by approaching a spiritual master. Inquire from him submissively and render service unto him. The self-realized souls can impart knowledge unto you because they have seen the truth.

This verse describes the three essential qualities for receiving transcendental knowledge: praṇipāta (submission), paripraśna (sincere inquiry), and sevā (service). These three together create the proper attitude for receiving knowledge from a genuine spiritual master.

In the context of Mother's Day, the class drew a beautiful parallel: just as a mother selflessly serves her child and imparts wisdom through love, the spiritual master similarly serves the disciple's spiritual welfare. The relationship between guru and disciple is one of the most sacred in Vedic culture.
