Bhagavat Gita: Chapter 4: Transcendental Knowledge: Text 34

tad viddhi praṇipātena paripraśnena sevayā upadekṣyanti te jñānaṁ jñāninas tattva-darśinaḥ

Synonyms: tat — that knowledge; viddhi — try to understand; praṇipātena — by approaching a spiritual master; paripraśnena — by submissive inquiries; sevayā — by the rendering of service; upadekṣyanti — they will initiate; te — you; jñānam — into knowledge; jñāninaḥ — the self-realized; tattva — of the truth; darśinaḥ — seers.

Translation: Just try to learn the truth by approaching a spiritual master. Inquire from him submissively and render service unto him. The self-realized souls can impart knowledge unto you because they have seen the truth.

The class focused on the importance of the guru-disciple relationship in the Vaishnava tradition. Without approaching a bona fide spiritual master, one cannot receive transcendental knowledge, no matter how much one studies independently.

The three qualifications mentioned in this verse — submission, inquiry, and service — are all necessary. Submission alone without inquiry leads to blind following. Inquiry alone without service leads to intellectual pride. Service alone without submission leads to independence. All three together create the perfect environment for receiving transcendental knowledge.
