Verse from Srimad Bhagavatam which describes the process of atonement

I would like to share a wonderful verse from the Srimad Bhagavatam which describes the process of atonement.

SB 6.1.11: na ced ihaivāpacitiṁ yiyāsur dehī śarīrāyatanena dehaḥ svayaṁ dhruvaṁ tatra hi tad-dhitāya prayāti tad vai puruṣasya karma

"If a person does not liquidate his debts in this life, he must certainly do so in the next life. The body one gets in the next life is determined by one's karma in this life."

Srila Prabhupada explains that the real process of atonement is not just performing some ritual or penance, but actually purifying the heart so that one does not commit the same sinful act again. Mere external atonement without internal purification is compared to an elephant bathing — it washes itself clean and then immediately covers itself with dust again.

The Srimad Bhagavatam (6.1.15) states that the highest form of atonement is the chanting of the holy names of the Lord: 'kecit kevalayā bhaktyā vāsudeva-parāyaṇāḥ' — those who are purely devoted to Vasudeva are freed from all sinful reactions.

Therefore, the chanting of Hare Krishna is the most powerful form of atonement in this age of Kali, as it not only removes the reactions of past sins but also purifies the heart so that one does not commit sins in the future.
